Digitalization has revolutionized almost every aspect of our lives, and the writing industry is no exception. We are living in the 4.0 era, also known as the information age. And it is probably the best time to be a writer.

The advent of the internet has created multiple new avenues and opportunities for publication, enabling writers to more easily share their work with the world. Overall, the writing industry is at a much better place than it was 10 years ago.

There is, however, a downside: Getting bylines has become relatively easier. As a result, as writers, we may begin to build a sense of disregard for any feedback or criticism.

The more bylines we add to our portfolio, the more confident we feel. Getting bylines is amazing and building confidence is great. However, when this confidence graduates to overconfidence and turns into a delusion where we stop accepting any criticism or feedback on our work, it becomes a problem.

I took no interest in writing during high school. The only things I wrote were literature essays and exam papers. I never imagined myself as a writer. To me, writing was a sacred job, reserved for only very creative or wise people.

It wasn’t until college that I discovered my passion for writing. It started out more like a hobby. I would scribble some notes when I got bored, read other people’s blogs, or even, when I felt inspired, write a couple pieces myself.

I still remember the first time I completed an entire blog post. It was effortless. I fleshed out the first draft in one go without much thinking, writing whatever sprung up in my mind.

And it felt wonderful.

How To Grow Your Writing Career by Adding Skill Sets

Writing is not a standalone profession. It involves many creative skills in addition to being able to put words on paper. Creating written content such as blog posts, sales copy, articles, and other forms of writing involves skills like research, photography, videography, editing, and more. As a writer, you’ll need to be able to do more than just write if you want to grow in your career.

It takes a lot to become established as a writer. Many professionals worked on their craft for years before achieving success. This is because when they started their careers, they hadn’t worked on building the skills necessary to market themselves as a business. Instead, they probably started out with paid writing jobs, trying desperately to grow their client list as they struggled to pay their bills.

One of the major reasons writers struggle is that they do not see their writing as a business. When you manage your writing as a business, you should draw up a business plan that includes how you will build your skills and business. Work hard,and invest in your business by learning complementary skills, and you’ll be on your way to growing in your writing career.
