When the Words “Self-Employed” Get Lost in Translation

Public service announcement: if you tell people you’re going to work for yourself, there’s going to be some confusion. I’ve discovered this over the past few months.

The Backstory

About two and a half years ago, I came roaring out of college with a fierceness. High off the fumes of academia’s self-congratulatory culture, I was going to put on my sensible pumps and get busy climbing the rungs on the corporate ladder at a speed heretofore unseen.

It took only two years in the corporate world for me to realize that wasn’t the life I wanted. What’s more, I would never have the life I wanted if I stood still.

It wasn’t that the job was awful. In fact, many would call me lucky. It paid well, and I felt valued and respected there. But just because I was lucky didn’t mean I was fulfilled. Do or Do Not. There Is No Try.

Fan or not, it is hard to deny that Star Wars is chock-full of inspirational, quote-worthy material.

One of the most legendary quotes is, “Do or do not. There is no try.”

For those of you who have not seen The Empire Strikes Back, allow me to set the scene: It’s the X-wing fighter sequence on Dagobah, and Luke Skywalker is doubtful about being able to raise his fighter from the swamp. After Jedi Master Yoda chastises him for having a defeatist attitude, Luke halfheartedly responds that he will try. Having none of that, Yoda hits him with the epic one-two punch.

Never Assume

We’ve all heard the saying, “When you assume, you make an ass out of ‘u’ and ‘me’.”

Yes, it’s cliche. Yes, we’ve heard it so many times that it has kind of lost its luster. But don’t dismiss it that easily.

In this fast-paced world, where we are often rushing from one destination to the next, acting as constant content creation machines, and being bombarded with information, it may seem more attractive to cut corners out of convenience, expediency, and comfort. However, doing this invariably results in damaging relationships and even selling ourselves short. Totally not worth it.Continue reading
